Leroy Thomas Short

March 19, 1941 ~ August 2, 2016 (age 75) 75 Years Old


Wilmington – Leroy Thomas (Monk) Short, 72 of here died Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Seasons Hospice in Hockessin, DE.

Born in Wilmington, he was the son of the late Fred Norman Short and Hattie Smack Short.

 

He was a 1962 graduate of the former Wilmington High School, now Cab Calloway School of the Arts, where he excelled in athletics.

He served in U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, receiving an honorable discharge in 1971.

Upon his discharge he became employed with the U.S. Postal Service in New Castle, DE.   He retired in 2006 after being employed for 25 years with General Motors Corporation in Wilmington.

He was a member of the U.A.W., Local #349, The Brothers Six (social club) and the Odd Fellows Football Club.

His survivors include three children: LaTonya Short of Englewood, NJ, Michael David Covington and Orlando Marshall, both of Wilmington, DE; six grandchildren: Cheyanne, Santana, Shokran, Destiny, Jyaire and Jayla; his devoted friends since high school: Rachel Marshall; five siblings: Joan Collins, William Short, Rev. Jewett Michael (Pastor Catherine) Short, Cortez and Tyrone McCray; very special friends: Carlton Roundtree and the Jones’ and Matthews’ families.

Four siblings: Yvonne Henry, Nathan Smack, Norman Short and Carlton Smack preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held 12:00 noon, Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at St. Paul U. M. Church in Berlin, where friends may view one hour prior to service.  Interment will be in the church cemetery.
