Mary Waters, 91 of Snow Hill, died Monday, February 12, 2018 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD.
Born near Pocomoke, MD, she was the daughter of the late Levin James Waters and Mary (Johnson) Waters. Her late husband, James Waters, Sr. died in 2012.
Mrs. Waters was a graduate of the former Worcester High School. Upon graduation, she matriculated at the former Morgan State Teachers’ College, now Morgan State University, receiving a B.A. degree in history. She did graduate studies at the former Salisbury State, now Salisbury University, receiving a Master’s degree in education.
She taught for 12 years as an elementary school teacher at the former Whaleysville Elementary and Pocomoke Elementary Schools, retiring in the late 70’s.
She was also a retired bus contractor for the Worcester County Board of Education.
Mrs. Waters was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Snow Hill where she served on the United Methodist Women and as coordinator of the Food Pantry for several years.
Her civic and community involvement included member of the Maryland State and Worcester County Retired Teachers Personnel. She was also a member of the Sunlight of the Valley #43, O.E.S., P.H.A. where she was secretary for several years and the Golden Circle, John H. Jones Assembly #284 where she was a past Loyal Lady Ruler. She also volunteered with the Samaritan Shelter of Pocomoke for many years.
Her survivors include two children: Stephanie (Joseph) Waters McClellan of Gwynn Oaks, MD and James (Sybilla) Waters, Jr. of Elkridge, MD; one granddaughter, Alexis McClellan of Raleigh, NC; one sister, Margaret Cottman of Gwynn Oaks, MD; several nieces and nephews.
Four siblings preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be held noon, Monday, February 19, 2018 at Ebenezer U.M. Church in Snow Hill where friends may view two hours prior to service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Fraternal rites will be held at 11:00 a.m.
