Hermetta Olivia Hudson, 64 of Snow Hill, Maryland, lovingly known as ‘Met or Bert,’ departed this life peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at her daughter’s home in Berlin, Maryland. Hermetta was born on August 17, 1959, in Salisbury, Maryland, to the late Dorothy Olivia Hudson and Herman “Bus” Hudson, Sr.
Hermetta received her early education in the Worcester County Public School system in Snow Hill, Maryland. She continued her education at Greensboro College, Greensboro, North Carolina. She was employed for ten years at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, (UMB), and later became employed at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), retiring in 2017 after serving fifteen years.
Even with a busy work and home schedule, she found time to fulfill her dream of becoming a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, (AKA). Hermetta was very civic minded and worked hard for her community. Her involvement included her Presidency of the Snow Hill Worcester County Branch of the National Association & Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Club Leader of the Soaring Eagles 4-H Club, President of Snow Hill Citizens for Decent Housing (SHCDH), and volunteer work at statewide Neighbor Good Partners (NCALL) events. Her love for community work was instilled in her throughout her faith-based childhood training at Mt. Wesley United Methodist Church and Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist churches.
To know Hermetta was to love her, she was such a pure beautiful soul. It was nothing for her to hit the highway to do “ POP INS” (as she called it) on family and friends. Even though traveling was her love, reading was her truest passion, especially a good Harlequin romance novel. She still made time for her favorite video games “ Tetris & Bust A Move”.
‘Met’ leaves to cherish unforgettable precious memories: her two loving children Shontelle and Devin Hudson, four grandsons and one god grandson, Vershawn Hudson-Crawford, TéVon Hudson-Crawford, Brayden Hudson, Caleb Davis and Juliun Holden, five brothers, Anthony (LaVerne) Hudson, Bowie, Maryland, Brian (Valeirie) Hudson, Greenwood, Delaware, Alphonso Hudson, Fairmount Heights, Maryland and Wesley (Marita) Johnson and Blake (Charlene) Johnson, Norway, one sister-in-law, Shyree Jackson-Hudson, Snow Hill, Maryland, thirteen nieces and nephews, Maurice Jr., Nathaniel, Nadine, Noah, Arianna, Brianna, Siobhan, Keith, William, Slye, Noel, Kayla and Zoey, four godchildren, Markeith Tucker, Ne'cole Tucker, Adrian Tucker, Aaron Tucker, and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Over the last two decades, Hermetta embraced four bonus children, Marcus Dennis and Chaya Horne, Berlin, Maryland, Qeshana Barkley, Glen Burnie, Maryland, and Angela Rayne, Jacksonville, Florida.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy Taylor-Blake Hudson and Herman Arthur Hudson, Sr., Hermetta was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman Arthur Hudson Jr., and Maurice Arthur Hudson Sr.
