To David's family: I was at JMB from 1966 to 1970 & had the pleasure of knowing David as a friend & colleague. He'll never know how much this young white teacher of POD appreciated having David in the same building. His enthusiasm, openness, teaching skills & "being on the same page" re: race relations meant so much to me. I know that part of the reason for our success with young people of both races at JMB was due to the atmosphere in our classrooms.
So as I approach the twilight of my life, I know I waited too long to say "Thank you, David." You made us all better. .................RIP -- until we meet again, my friend. .[John Clinton (POD teacher at JMB), now living in Lincoln, NE.]

Mrs. Mae Johnson and family.
We are sorry we are not with you today in person, we are with you in prayer. We are deeply pained and words are no help in expressing the sorrow we feel at this moment. There are so many memories we share of such a wonderful person. He shared so much love each of us and his smile made us feel a warm appreciation to be in his company. Our hearts are heavy.
He has departed this earth but David will forever be in our heart. May the care and love of those around you provide comfort and peace to get you the days to come. Our sincere condolence, we are here for you just a phone call away. Velma Hinnant and Classmates

We're sorry to hear about the passing of our cousin. Please know that the Barnes family will continue to keep our family lifted in prayer. I'm totally impressed with the impact that cousin David made to others over the years. His life was definitely not in vain. This is what the "dash" is all about. When we all get to Heaven...

I was saddened to learn about the passing of Dr. Johnson on September 21. My condolences to his family and loved ones. I am so very sorry for your loss. I also feel a sense that the world has lost a beautiful soul, but that heaven has regained one of its angels.

Dr. David Johnson had a profound impact on my life while I was a student at James M. Bennett Sr. High. I actually had the distinct pleasure to have him as my English teacher for my Junior and Senior years. I will forever owe a debt of gratitude to him for the discipline, encouragement, and high standards to which he held his students and myself. While the literature we read I may not recall as much as he may have liked, I’ll remember forever the conversations and debates that he encouraged and perhaps instigated? I am honored to have known him, value what he taught me more than he could ever know, and send my love and heart to his wife and family.

Goodbye kind sir. Thank you for everything.

If I've learned anything down through the years, it's that nothing beautiful in this world is ever really lost- Those we cherish will always live on in memory. I knew him as a student and a teacher. He was a wonderful person and he will truly be missed. The family has my deepest sympathy for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear of your great loss. Recently I lost my dear mother, and found
great comfort in the Holy Bible, like at Isaiah 25 verse 8 - "The Sovereign Lord will
swallow up death forever, and wipe away the tears from all faces." Also at
Revelation 21 verse 4, we find God's promise to remove both pain and death.

Be thankful for the good times he shared with us. He is free from the pain and struggles of this world.
God bless you an know that we share in your grief.

My Thoughts And Prayers For The Johnson Family
My Senior year in high school, I met Mr David Johnson. My whole life changed because he was able to see in me, what I could not see in myself. He pushed me to be a better student, to stop being what other people thought I was, and become the woman I am today. My heart is breaking and heavy right along with you all. Mr D, will always be in my heart. I thank God for having the chance to know him.

I learned more from Dr. Johnson than any teacher I had in high school. Writing is one of my strengths and I credit Dr. Johnson with that - he pushed his students to do their best. Furthermore, Dr. Johnson was a kind and loving person, and I am honored to have known him. Praying for comfort for his family.

I am very saddened to hear of this. Mr. Johnson was my 12th grade English teacher in 1975. Thanks to him I started college with the scholastic tools that I needed to be successful. I will always remember his intelligence, wit, dedication to helping his students learn how to improve themselves. I remember one time I didn't have a term paper written by the due date. I explained that I done all of the research and outlining but just hadn't gotten the final draft written on time. Instead of failing me he said: "Well if you've done all that then you should be able to give your paper as an oral presentation to the class. " So, I got up in front of the class and presented my "term paper". He gave me a B- and said that it might have been an A if I had followed instructions and written it down. That told me two things: One was that he cared more about what I had learned then he did about how well I did exactly what I was told. The second however, was that it was still important to follow instructions. I learned more than English and literature in his class. I learned life lessons that I still rely on 42 years later. I hope to meet him again in heaven when my time comes.
