Hattie Elaine (Coulbourn) Winder

HEBRON – Hattie Elaine Winder, 90 died Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD.

 Born in Rockawalkin, near Hebron, MD, she was the daughter of the late John K. and Lear Elizabeth (Horsey) Coulbourn.  Her late husband Robert Edward Winder, Sr. died in 2011.

She was a 1944 graduate of the former Salisbury Colored High School. Upon graduation, she matriculated at Elizabeth City State College in N.C., receiving a B.S. degree in Elementary Education.  She did further studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and the former Salisbury State College, receiving her Master’s Equivalency.

 Her teaching career spanned more than thirty years.  She taught at the former one-room school in Sharptown, MD, former Hebron and Salisbury Elementary Schools and retired from Westside Primary in Quantico, MD.

 She was a former member of the former St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Rockawalkin and upon marriage, transferred her membership to St. Luke United Methodist Church in Hebron.. There she served as a member and former president of the United Methodist Women; Senior Choir member, Communion Steward, past chair of the Worship Committee and former Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent.

 Her civic and community involvement included: Wicomico County Retired Teachers Assoc.; Maryland State Retired School Personnel; founding member of Phi Delta Kappa, Beta Tau Chapter and Board of Directors for Dove Pointe.

 Her survivors include two children: Deborah of Salisbury, MD and Maurice Winder of Hebron MD; one sister: Eva Morris of Sumpter, SC; one sister-in-law: Mary Brown Winder of Sharptown, MD and a host of nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, a son: Robert E. Winder, Jr. and ten siblings: Norman, Freddie, Fulton, Charles and John Coulbourn, Bertha Hull, Louise Trader-Bailey, Gladys Palmer, Lear Elizabeth Dutton and Helen Jones, preceded her in death.

 A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 11, 2017 at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Hebron.  Interment will be in Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron.  Friends may view on Friday, from 6-8 pm at Jolley Memorial Chapel in Salisbury and on Saturday, at the church, one hour prior to service.
