Obituary

Annabelle Church Dix transitioned peacefully and was called to rest on Monday, October 3, 2022, at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Hospital in Salisbury, MD. Annabelle was born on January 6, 1933, in her grandparents' home in Nebo, Delaware. The birth setting was in the living room heated by a large black coal stove. Annabelle was the second of eight children born to the late Harry T. and Hazel Burris Church.  Annabelle's parents nurtured her and all their children on the family farm in Delmar, Maryland.

Annabelle's (business) education began at Lake Street Elementary School in Salisbury, Maryland. In the sixth grade, she was responsible for giving children change for lunch money. She graduated from a segregated high school in June 1950. In that same year, Annabelle entered Morgan State College (now Morgan State University) focusing on Business Administration as her major. The highlight of her experience at Morgan was to see Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and hear his keynote address at her graduation in May 1954.

Annabelle never forgot Dr. Winfred Bryson, her advisor and chairperson of Economics and Business at Morgan State. Dr. Bryson was instrumental in obtaining Annabelle's first job after graduation as a bookkeeper for Robinson's Clothing Store in Baltimore, Maryland.

In December 1955, Annabelle married her fiance', Seldon Dix, Jr., who after college, enlisted in the United States Navy. Following an honorable discharge in 1958, Seldon and Annabelle took off from Baltimore and headed to Brooklyn, New York in her grandfather's 1951 Black Chevy two-door sedan.

Later, Annabelle worked in advertising and marketing for a furniture company in New York City, while her husband worked for the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) as a graphic designer. Seldon and Annabelle purchased their first home in Roosevelt, Long Island, New York in 1965. In 1971, Annabelle was offered a position as an accountant for the Roosevelt Public School District's business office. Her husband at that time was the Art Director for the Promotions Department of TIME, Inc. (now TIME WARNER).  She was later promoted to senior accountant, district treasurer, and financial officer for the school board where she was responsible for overseeing a 30-million-dollar budget. Her husband was promoted to Executive Art Director of TIME WARNER'S Promotion Department. Annabelle taught basic sewing and tailoring in the Adult Education program. She retired in January 1994. In October 1994, Annabelle and Seldon relocated back to their home state of Maryland to live closer to their families. Delmar was a place where fond memories and family history were rich, dating back to the 1800s. They designed and had a home built on the family farm, the same place where Annabelle grew up. Annabelle and her husband, Seldon, were married for sixty-two years.

Annabelle was an active member of Wesley Temple United Methodist since the spring of 1995. She served on the Pastor Parish Relations Board. She served as the Finance Committee Chairperson for thirteen years and chaired Friends and Family Day and Women's Day. Annabelle is a member of the Knitter's Club hosted by Barnes and Nobel, the Lydia Quilt Guild of Hebron, and The Community Organization for Progress, Inc. She was the owner of the Hook and Eye Nook, a quilting and sewing, embroidery, and machine knitting business.  For twenty years she hosted the Hook and Eye Nook Home Show and Luncheon.

Annabelle Church Dix joins her husband, Seldon Dix, Jr., who preceded her in death. Annabelle is survived by her daughter, Angela Dix Lee, EdD, ThD (Bill Lee); son, David Dix, MD (Therol, Esq.); grandson, Norbert "Norby" A. Seals, Jr.; grand-daughters Katherine E.
