Obituary

Dr. Charles H. E. Smith, Sr. (Chick), 82 died Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Aurora Senior Living of Manokin in Princess Anne, MD.

Born in Machipongo, VA, he was the son of the late Major and Helen (White) Smith.  His late wife Ruby Walker Smith died in 1972.

He attended the former Salisbury High School and graduated in 1954 from Northampton High School in Northampton, VA. He matriculated at Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA earning a diploma in Liberal Arts.  He earned both a Bachelor and Master's degree in History from Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA and his P.H. D. in Education and Social Studies from the University of VA, Charlottesville, VA.  He served as a Fellow at : Union College, Schenectady, NY, Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Va, Howard University, Washington, DC and the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, MD.  He did Advance Graduate Study in Curriculum and School Personnel Administration at University of Maryland, College Park, MD.

His teaching career which spanned 37 years began at Central High School (Goochland, VA), Hare Valley Elementary School, (Exmore, VA), I.C. Norcom High School, (Churchland, VA), Woodrow Wilson High School and Manor High School, (Portsmouth, VA); Norfolk State Evening University (Norfolk, VA) , University of Maryland, Eastern Shore (Princess Anne, MD) and the Eastern Correctional Institution (Westover, MD)

He served in the US Army as Second Lieutenant of Intelligence and served active duty at Ft. Holabird, MD.

He was a member of Kappa Phi Kappa (Educational Fraternity), Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Omicron Lambda Chapter in Princess Anne, MD; former member of Portsmouth Educational Assoc.; Virginia Teacher's Assoc.; N.E.A.. His alumni memberships included: Salisbury High School, Norfolk State University, Virginia State University and University of Virginia.

His civic involvement included the NAACP, Tri-County Org. and New Directions Committee.  Dr. Smith also served as a Board member for several local organizations, including: Shore-Up, Inc., Lower Shore Enterprises where he was the first African American president; and Century Club of Fruitland Community Center. He was a former Scout Master of a Boy Scout Troop in Exmore, VA.

He was a member of Mt. Calvary U.M. Church in Fruitland, MD where he served as chair of the Council on Ministries; Administrative Council, Higher Education and Campus Ministries; founder of the Richard Allen Memorial Scholarship Committee, PPR Committee; church historian and chair for the 122nd Church Anniversary.  Dr. Smith was also the author of "Calvary: An Oral History."

His survivors include a son: Charles H.E. Smith, Jr. of Lake Ridge, VA; four grandchildren: Charles H.E., III of Arlington, Va, Joel Smith of Falls Church, VA and James, Jr. and Jonta' Trower of Salisbury, MD; one sister, Betty R. Smith of Fruitland, MD; two sisters-in-law: Hazel W. Roy of Lake Ridge, VA and Fannie R. Walker of Arlington, VA, several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and wife, a daughter, Phyllis A. Wright,  2 brothers, James and Isaac Smith and sister, Annie Mae Thomas preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Mt. Calvary UM Church in Fruitland.  Friends may view, Friday, September 28, 2018, from 6-8 pm at Jolley Memorial Chapel, P.A. in Salisbury, MD where Fraternal rites will be held at 7:00 p.m. Another viewing will be held  Saturday, at the church, one hour prior to service.  Interment will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 1, 2018 at Bethel AME Church cemetery in Cape Charles, VA.
