Elaine Victoria Spry, 93, died Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.  She had been a resident of the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center since April 2013.

Born in Hurlock, she was the daughter of the late Elsie Spry.

She was a graduate of the former Frederick Douglass High School in Cambridge, MD.  Upon graduation she matriculated to the former Bowie State Normal School, now Bowie State University, receiving a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education.  She earned a Master's degree from New York University and did graduate work in Administration and Supervision at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Her teaching career which spanned 36 years began at the former Hutt's Chapel in Worcester County (1941), former Flower Street Elementary School in Berlin (1942) , where she later became the principal and remained there until their closing.  She was then assigned Vice Principal at Berlin Middle School, retiring in 1979.

Mrs. Spry was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she served on the Young Adult choir and United Methodist Women.

Her community and civic involvement included: member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; former member of the Lily of the Valley Chapter #47, O.E.S., P.H.A. ; the NAACP; Worcester County Retired Teachers and National Retired Teachers Association and the Maryland State Retired Teachers Association.

She has received several honors and awards for her years of service as an educator and for her community involvement.

Her survivors include a devoted cousin, Nathaniel Pinkney and his wife Barbara Jean of Lansdale, PA; two God-daughters: Sandra Day and Carolyn McKie, special caregiver, Marie Brittingham and other cousins and extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be held 6:00 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2014 at St. Paul U.M. Church in Berlin, Maryland where friends may call one hour prior to service.  Interment will be 1:00 p.m., Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Hurlock U.M. Church Cemetery in Petersburg, MD.
