Gladys Billups Goslee, 78 died Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, MD.
Born in Yorktown, VA, she was the daughter of the late George H., Sr. and Edna (Dennis) Billups.
She was an honors graduate of the York County High School in Yorktown, VA. Upon graduation, she matriculated at St. Augustine's University in Raleigh, NC, receiving a B.A. degree in English and French. She continued her studies at Hampton University, Virginia State University's Institutes of Foreign Study, University of Maryland, College Park and through her extensive travel in French-speaking countries, receiving a Master's Equivalency.
Her career as a teacher spanned forty one years, including: Culpeper, VA (1960), the former Salisbury High School, Wicomico High School, Bennett Middle School and Parkside High School, retiring in 2001.
Throughout her teaching career, she received numerous acknowledgements and awards, including: 1995 Outstanding Foreign Language Teacher, 1999 Wicomico County Teacher of the Year and Maryland State Finalist. Following her retirement, Gladys served as a new teacher coach/consultant and mentor for new foreign language teachers.
She was a longtime member of Zion United Methodist Church in Sharptown, MD where she served as Chairperson of the Commission on Education and Vacation Bible School Coordinator, member of the United Methodist Women, church choir and former member of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee.
Her civic and community involvements included: past Board member of the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore; Wor-Wic Community College and the Holly Center; current visionary member of the Women's Fund, and current corporate member; Board of Visitors for the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, Board member of the Charles H. Chipman Foundation; member of Wicomico Co. Retired Teacher's Personnel, Salisbury High School Alumni Assoc.; member and past president of the Delta Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; O.C. Gang Family and Friends, member and past matron of Naomi Chapter #16, Order of the Eastern Star, P.H.A.; Loyal Lady Ruler of the John H. Jones, Jr., Assembly #284, Order of the Golden Circle; Princess Anne Chapter of the Links, Inc. and the Saturday Book Club. She was the recipient of the Friend of Children and the Friend of Education awards.
Her survivors include her husband of 52 years: Charles G. Goslee of Salisbury; two daughters: Vonda G. (Aaron) Green of Wyoming, DE and Julie (Darrell) Owens of West Orange, NJ; six grandchildren: Gabrielle and Aaron Green, Zachary, Celeste, Joshua and Jhamed Owens; sisters and brother-in-law: Mary Billups, Hortense Goslee Stanley and Rhuel (Sylvia) Goslee, goddaughter: Paula Commodore and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Zion U.M. Church in Sharptown. A Memorial service and Time of Remembrance will be held Friday evening from 6-9:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Salisbury and on Saturday, one hour prior to service. Interment will be 9:00 a.m., Monday, November 17, 2014 at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron.
