Obituary

“A Life Well Lived"

Catherine Grace Purnell, better known as Grace, was born in Berlin, Maryland, on May 1, 1928. She was the second daughter of Grayson Gaines and Sarah (Nee Mumford) Gaines.

Grace had three sisters—Hattie, Emma, and Sarah—and one brother, Gilbert. Hattie and Gilbert preceded Grace in death.

After graduating as salutatorian of her class, Grace moved to Philadelphia, where she attended Berean Institute to study dressmaking. During this time, Grace met her future husband, Raymond B. Purnell. The two were married on July 23, 1947. Their family grew to include three children, and the Purnells purchased a home in West Philadelphia.

Raymond worked at ARCO, and Grace continued dressmaking while caring for the home. Grace soon joined Camphor United Methodist Church and became deeply involved in the functions of the church.

Camphor allowed Grace to use her leadership skills through activities involving young people. She taught Sunday school, led MYF, directed a summer camp for several years, and worked with the United Methodist Women.

Grace also helped with the Black Methodist for Church Renewal initiative. The Purnell children were also involved in many local activities.

When Raymond retired after 35 years at ARCO, he and Grace decided to move permanently to Berlin. The couple was warmly welcomed by family and friends, both old and new. Soon, they resumed working in the local church, just as they had done in Philadelphia. St. Paul United Methodist Church made good use of Grace’s knowledge and experience in the Methodist Church.

Unfortunately, Raymond became ill, and Grace turned her attention to caring for him. She still found time for planting, crafting, Bible study, and compiling articles on Berlin history.

Grace will be sorely missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind her eldest daughter, Joanne (Nee Purnell) Williams, and husband George; two sisters, Emma (Nee Gaines) Briddell and husband John, and Sarah (Gaines) Smith. In addition, Grace will be remembered by her great-grandchildren: Christa, Angela, Richard, and Andrew. Grace is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, loving family members, and friends.

Memories

Life can never stay the same

No matter how we try

Our hands can never stop

The clock of life from ticking by

But love remains unchanging

In the care of sorrowing hearts

For as the love of life is stilled

The love of memory starts
