IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hazel
Jones
May 27, 1940 – October 15, 2024
Hazel Evelyn Palmer-Jones entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at home in Head-Of-Creek, Maryland, after a long battle with illness. Born May 27, 1940, Hazel was the first of five children born to the late Paul Lee Palmer and Gladys Clementine Palmer.
Hazel grew up in the Hebron/Rockawalkin community in Maryland, where she attended Wicomico County Public Schools and graduated from Salisbury High School in 1958. Her education laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to hard work and community service. Hazel dedicated much of her life to her work, having been employed by Champion Chicken, Nanticoke Seafood, Open Road, Shore-Up, Campbell Soup Company, and ultimately retiring from Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
In her earlier years, Hazel was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Hebron, MD, where she embraced her faith and accepted the Lord as her personal Savior. After moving to Head-of-Creek, she became a devoted member of St. James Free Methodist Church in Quantico, MD. Hazel was deeply involved in her church community and served faithfully for many years until her health began to decline. She was a proud member of the St. James Usher Board and a dedicated member of the Zionettes for over 50 years.
In addition to her work and faith, Hazel was deeply involved in her community. She was an active member of the John R. Coulbourn Family Reunion Committee, the Salisbury High School Alumni Association, the Westside Activity Club, and served in the Westside Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary for 20 years. Hazel was also a devoted member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. Her steadfast commitment to these organizations reflected her love for family, community, and fellowship, as well as her desire to make a positive impact wherever she could.
Outside of her many commitments, Hazel found joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved playing bingo, a lively card game, watching baseball and basketball, and, most of all, spending quality time with her family. Her fiery personality and dedication to her loved ones brought joy to many family gatherings, always filled with love, laughter, and warmth.
In 1958, Hazel married the love of her life, the late Harland Thomas Jones Sr., and together they built a family and shared a devoted partnership. From their union, they had four children to which Hazel was a dedicated mother. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved children: Rhonda Jones, Harland "TJ" Jones Jr., and Evicka "Vicki" Jones-Bryant (William). Her nurturing spirit lives on through her grandchildren—Shanta Smith (Brandon), Shamara Smith, and LaShai Gaines (Patrick)—as well as her great-grandchildren Derrick Milton, Destiny Nibblett, Daeja Condon, Amari Collick, Devon Milton, Weston Garvin, and David Gaines. Hazel was further blessed to welcome three great-great-grandchildren: Jaxon Nibblett, Ezekiel Condon, and Jace Nibblett. She is also survived by her loving sister, Trudy Tull, along with her nephews Clyde Evans Jr. Alonzo Tull and her niece Lynnea Tull.
Hazel was preceded in death by her daughters, Sandra Erica Palmer and Carla Deshera Jones, and her stepson, Alonzo Birkhead. In her passing, she is now reunited with her siblings, Carolyn Evans, Rainelle Toy, and Donald Palmer. Hazel's memory will be honored and cherished by a host of cousins, and dear friends, who were touched by her gentle heart and warm spirit.
Hazel's legacy of love, compassion, and strength will live on through the lives of her children, grandchildren, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
