Hester Caroline Smith, 97 formerly of Berlin, died Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Medstar Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, MD.  She had been a resident of Family Plus Assisted Living for the past ten years.

Born in Berlin, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Rachel (Smack) Fisher.  Her late husband, Leroy Exvelt Smith died in 1996.

She was a member of New Bethel U.M. Church in Berlin where she served in various ministries, including, the choir, United Methodist Women, Board of Trustees, Finance Committee and was a founding member of the Helping Hands Club, a community outreach program.

Her civic involvement included member of the Order of the Household of Ruth, #3645, G.U.O.O.F. and the former Sunlight Chapter #43, O.E.S., P.H.A., now Sunlight of the Valley Chapter #47, O.E.S., P.H.A. where she was past Worthy Matron.

She retired from the Angler Restaurant in Ocean City where she was employed as a chef for thirty years.

Her survivors include three children: Betty Ann Paterson of Upper Marlboro, MD, Eugene (Fanseen) Smith of Camp Springs, MD and Gail Smith-Downing of Alexandria, VA., eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and a host of cousins.

A son, Leroy E. Smith, Jr. preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held, 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 10, 2015 at New Bethel U.M. Church where friends may call two hours prior to service.  Interment will be in the church cemetery.  Fraternal rites will begin at 10:30 a.m.
