Jacqueline (Jackie) Dennis Johnson, 70, died Sunday, November 24, 2013 at her West Road home in Salisbury, MD.
Born in Pocomoke City, MD, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Ruth (Reynolds) Dennis.
She was a 1961 graduate of the former Worcester High School. Upon graduation she matriculated at the former Maryland State College, now University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, graduating in 1965 with a B.A. degree in English. She did further studies at the former Salisbury State College, now Salisbury University receiving a Master's degree in education and guidance counseling credentials.
Her career as an Educator spanned 37 years. She taught in Somerset County (1965-1966); Worcester County; namely: the former Ross Street Elementary School in Snow Hill; Snow Hill Middle School and retired in 2001 after nineteen years as a guidance counselor at Pocomoke Elementary School. After retirement she was guidance counselor at West Seaford Elementary school for a year.
Her community and civic involvement included; member of Wesley Temple United Methodist Church in Salisbury where she served as lay servant, worship leader, United Methodist Women and Chancel choir member where she was former chairperson. She formerly served as Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, membership committee, Outpost Church school, church visitation team and Gospel choir. She was a member and Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Omega Chapter in Salisbury, maintaining duties as the chapter's chaplain. She was member of the Worcester County Teacher's Assoc., Maryland State Education Assoc., NEA, and Worcester County Retired School Personnel where she formerly served as secretary. She was also a member of the Wicomico County Mentoring Program.
Her survivors include two children and their father: William S. Johnson, Jr. (Hiele) of Morton, PA, Andrea J. Johnson and Rev. William S. Johnson, Sr., both of Salisbury, MD; two grandchildren: William T. Johnson and Ethan Andrew Hodnett-Bell; one sister and brother: Constance Lavern Wright of Baltimore, MD and Gary (Jackie) M. Burton of Martinsville, VA and several nieces and nephews.
Two brothers: Lawrence E. Dennis and John "Buddy" Dennis, Jr. preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Wesley Temple United Methodist Church in Salisbury where friends may call Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday, one hour prior to service. Fraternal rites will be held Friday at 7:15 p.m. Interment will be in Green Acres Memorial Park in Salisbury.
