BERLIN- Mary Edna Purnell, 97 died Monday, April 24, 2017 at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she had been a resident since 2012.

Born in Berlin, she was the daughter of the late John and Hennie (Brittingham) Smack.  Her late husband, Oliver Purnell died several years ago.

She was formerly employed as a housekeeper at an Ocean City Motel; housekeeper and cook for the Lynch Family of Ocean City and was chef for the Berlin Lion's Club, until her retirement.

She was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church where she served as an Usher and Communion Stewardess.

Her survivors include a special niece, Catherine (William) Whaley, who were her caretakers; several other nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held noon, Thursday, May 4, 2017 at New Bethel United Methodist Church in Berlin where friends may view, one hour prior to service.  Interment will be in St. Paul U.M. Church cemetery.
