Obituary

Phyllis Fredia Mitchell, born on July 15, 1942, in Salisbury, Maryland, was the beloved daughter of the late Robert and Ocie Mitchell.

She began her education journey in the Wicomico County Public Schools system. Her career took her to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she served The Philadelphia School District as a dedicated school bus driver for thirty years. After her retirement, she returned to her hometown, Salisbury, Maryland.

Phyllis, affectionately known as 'Zebra Lady'.

Phyllis found Christ at an early age and became a member of the Friendship United Methodist Church in Wetipquin, Maryland. She remained a faithful and devoted tithing member until her death.  In 1967, Phyllis and her two daughters, Gloria and Beverly, relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Phyllis's career was a testament to her dedication and love for children. She was deeply committed to the safety of the children she transported. After thirty years of dedicated service, she returned home to Salisbury, Maryland, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and service.

Community involvement was important to Phyllis, and she was an active member of the Eastern Stars in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows District Lodge 14 (GUOOF), and the Monitor Household of Ruth #4550, Salisbury, MD. She was also a member of a CB Radio Club, and her radio name was 'Zebra Lady', which followed her for life.

Phyllis's love for her family was unparalleled. Despite living in Philadelphia, she made it a point to return home to Salisbury, Maryland, almost every weekend with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her presence was the 'glue' that held the Mitchell Family together, a testament to her strength and devotion.

Phyllis loved playing cards, spending time at the casino, caring for her plants, and cooking for her family, especially everyone's birthday cake. She would also pay her grands for every "A" they received on their report cards because education was important to her. She wanted the best for her family. When the weather was nice, Phyllis could be found sitting on her deck, along with her siblings, listening to great music. And every now and again, she might hit the dance floor and do her famous 2-step dance moves. Her beverage of choice was an ice-cold Pepsi, while she talked "mess and fussed" with those she loved. Phyllis would 'flip' you the bird in a minute as that was her love language. When she was around, everyone was guaranteed a good time. She was the GOAT.

Phyllis leaves to cherish her loving memory, two daughters, Gloria (Raymond), and Beverly (Tony), grandsons, Augustus (Dana), Keon (Talaiha), Ameen, and Dominic, 18 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great-grandchildren, siblings, Valerie, Bobby (Anne), Stanley, Diane, Yolanda (Tommy), Lonnie, Anna, and George, extra special nephew, Rick, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and special grandson, Stanley Boone.

Heaven is her home, and she is reunited with her parents, Robert and Ocie Mitchell, sister, Cleo, brothers, Leon and Wayne, great-great-grandson, Cade, sister-in-law, Marie, and brother-in-law, R. Junior.
