Raymond B. (Sleep) Purnell, Jr. 86 died Friday, November 8, 2013 at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Raymond B. Purnell, Sr. and Hattie (Henry) Purnell.
He received his formal education in Philadelphia. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during WWII until receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He was a member of the American Legion, Duncan Showell Post #231 in Berlin.
He was employed for thirty-five years as a mechanic for the former ARCO (Atlantic Richfield Old Company), now B.P. Oil retiring in 1982.
He was a member of Camphor Memorial U.M. Church in Philadelphia where he was an usher and member of the Philadelphia Brotherhood. He transferred his membership in to St. Paul U.M. Church in Berlin in 1982 where he was a trustee and caretaker of the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Grace Purnell of Berlin; two children, Joanne (George) Williams of Philadelphia and Raymond B. (Penny) Purnell, III of Berlin; four grandchildren; one sister, Lois (Charles) Corey of Philadelphia, three sisters-in-law and a host of nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Romaine Pringle and two brothers preceded him in death.
A funeral service will be held noon, Friday, November 15, 2013 at St. Paul U.M. Church in Berlin where friends may call two hours prior to service. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
