Shirley's Journey
Shirley Roberta "Granny" (Norman) Garrett was born in Plymouth, North Carolina to Herbert Norman and Clara (Parker) Norman on March 4, 1935. She passed away peacefully, at home in Salisbury, Maryland surrounded by her family on February 23, 2021.
Shirley moved to Norfolk, Virginia at a young age.
Shirley was educated in the Norfolk Catholic Diocese School System. Shirley attended Norfolk State University to pursue her dreams of becoming a nurse. She had a passion for helping others.
After matriculating at NSU Shirley moved to Harlem, New York, to accept a nursing position. There she met and married Raymond Leroy Garrett Jr. and later moved to Long Island, NY.
Shirley worked at various employers till she retired. Raymond and Shirley relocated to Virginia and enjoyed retired life.
Thereafter she became a devoted grandmother and matriarch of the Garrett family. She was called "Granny" by everyone, genuinely enjoying Grand mothering. She cared for granddaughters Kristina and Charisse while their mothers served in the United States Army.
Shirley loved to sew and do home improvement projects.
After the grandchildren were reunited with their parents, Shirley and Raymond relocated again to Salisbury, Maryland. As empty nesters they enjoyed traveling, bowling, and caring for their family.
Shirley was an active member of Wesley Temple United Methodist Church, Salisbury Maryland.
Shirley is preceded in death by husband, Raymond L. Garrett, Jr, siblings; Sherman Norman, Marilyn Norman, Carrie Parker, grandchildren; Charisse and Brandon.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory, children: Johnny Garrett (Sharon) of Queens, NY, Sheila Wallace (Michael) of Salisbury, MD, Cynthia Garrett of Salisbury, MD, Tina Garrett (Simone) of Suffolk, VA, Patricia Garrett-Jeremiah (Chris) of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren: Kristina, Sheila, Shaleah, Reginald, Shanice, Shanequa; great grandchildren: Amaya, Cara, Carter, and Kaliyah; a sister-in-law: Linda Taylor of the Bronx, NY; two honorary daughter/nieces: Alfreda Brown and Edith Parker; and a host of loving family, extended relatives, and frie nds.
