Washington, DC – Vernetta M. Hitch, 69, formerly of Allen, died Sunday, January 24, 2016, at the Washington Home & Community Hospices in Washington, DC.
Born in Allen, she was the daughter of the late Leithan M. Hitch, Sr. and Blanche (Banks) Hitch.
She was a 1964 graduate of the former Salisbury High School. Upon graduation she matriculated at the former Atlantic Business College in Washington, receiving her certification in Secretarial Science.
She was retired after eighteen years with the U.S. Government, working in the Dept. of Treasury with the U.S. Coast and the Dept. of Commerce with NOAA. After retirement she became employed with the World Bank for twenty years as Budget and Program Assistants.
She was a member of the Lincoln Park United Methodist Church in Washington and the Salisbury High School Alumni Association.
Her survivors include one daughter: Petrina Hitch of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren: Marcus and Mia Evans; one great grandson: Dakari; nine siblings; one aunt: Viola Chandler and a host of nieces and nephews.
A brother Leithan "Buddy" Hitch, Jr. preceded her in death September 2015.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 5, 2016, at Friendship U.M. Church in Allen where friends may view two hours prior to service. Interment will be in Mt. Zion Historical Church cemetery, Polk's Road near Princess Anne, MD.
