Pocomoke - Walter (Walt) George Parks, 69 died Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, MD.
Born in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Walter and Mable (Ballard) Parks.
He was a 1965 graduate of the former Somerset Junior/Senior High School in Princess Anne. Upon graduation he matriculated to the former Maryland State College, now the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. While attending college, he was drafted in the U.S. Army. He served in the 101st Army Airborne Screaming Eagles during the Vietnam War, receiving an honorable discharge.
He retired in 2007 after more than thirty years from NASA at Wallop's Island where he was a Master Electronic Technician.
He was a member of St. James U.M. Church and transferred his membership to Mt. Zion U.M. Church, both in Pocomoke City.
He was the first African American certified scuba diver on the Eastern Shore. He was a member of the VFW Post #10048 in Pocomoke City.
He is survived by his wife Connie W. Parks of Pocomoke, MD; two children: Franklin Savage of Pocomoke and Kensey (Derrick) Washington of Washington, DC; a grandson: Sakai Savage; two brothers: Donald of Salisbury and Olin (Anita) Parks of New Carrollton, MD; one uncle: Calvin Ballard and several nieces and nephews.
A sister Vivian E. Parks preceded him in death in 2008.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 6, 2016 at Jolley Memorial Chapel in Salisbury where friends may view two hours prior to service. Interment will be in Eastern Shore Veteran's Cemetery in Hurlock at a later date.
