Obituary

Wanda Mae Purnell Downes, born March 19, 1934, in Salisbury, Maryland, peacefully received her heavenly wings on June 6, 2026. She was the beloved daughter of the late Howard James Purnell and Mary Virginia Birckhead Purnell, and was preceded in death by her sons, Gregory Daniel Downes and Jaenell Otis Downes.

Wanda was a devoted servant of God, known affectionately as “Mom,” “Mom Wanda,” and “Wanda Mae.” She lived a life rooted in faith, love, and service. From her early involvement in church and community activities to her decades of dedication as a Special Education assistant at Wicomico County High School, Wanda touched countless lives with her compassion, humor, and unwavering kindness.

She served faithfully at Wesley Temple United Methodist Church in numerous roles, including Sunday School teacher, United Methodist Women President, Chancel Choir Director, and leader in Older Adult Ministries. Wanda was also deeply committed to community service through the Spirit of Democracy Auxiliary Unit 145, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Golden Circle, the Salisbury High Association, and the Wicomico County Election Board.

Wanda’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her daughter, Vanessa M. Downes; grandchildren Lamont Downes, Dawn Mitchell (Jannia), and Jade Downes; greatgrandchildren Alexis Price and Destiny Price; greatgreatgrandchildren Brixand Weslynn Griffin; daughtersinlaw Cindy Downes and Kathy Downes; lifelong best friends Irma Curry and Rosemary Hudson; special cousin Katrina Purnell; goddaughter Kim Fisher; her hero D’Bo; caregivers Earleneand Shelia; and a host of extended family and friends.

Wanda lived with joy, generosity, and a heart big enough for everyone she met. Her legacy of love will continue to shine through all who were blessed to know her.
