Obituary

Orrensy William Hull, Jr. of Delmar, MD, died Tuesday, November 26, 2013 in Salisbury, MD.

Born in Wetipquin, he was the son of the late Orrensy William, Sr. and Lottie (Conway) Hull.

He was a graduate of Nanticoke High School. Upon his graduation, he matriculated to Lincoln University, Lincoln Pennsylvania, obtaining a B.A. degree in Physics with a minor in Chemistry.  He did further studies at University of Pennsylvania, obtaining a Masters degree and PH.D.  in Physics, and received an Electrical Engineering equivalency from Stevens Institute of Technology.

Mr. Hull served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.

He was the Vice Principal of the former Salisbury High School from 1946-1962; member of the Wicomico County Board of Education from 1960-1971, becoming the first African-American vice president in 1967.  After 21 years of service in secondary education, he became professor at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Campus and its predecessor organization, the former Maryland State College, from 1960-1982.  He was also a faculty member and the first African American professor of  the former Salisbury State College, now Salisbury State University, from 1968-1970.

He received awards for distinguished service to the University.  He served as the Advisor to the Cooperative Education Program during his tenure at Maryland State and in 1982 was named Associate Professor Emeritus by the University of Maryland, Board of Regents.

His many civic involvements included: past election judge, service on several local boards and credit unions, the Wicomico Nursing Home building committee and National Conference of Christians and Jews.  He was honored with the Living Legacy Award for 75 years of service in the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. where he was former President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary; served as Charter Member and founder of the local Delta Gamma Sigma Chapter and founder and charter member of Gamma Theta Chapter of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc. at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where a scholarship was established in his name.

He was a member of Wesley Temple United Methodist Church where he was faithful in several organizations within the church, including the United Methodist Men.

Mr. Hull is survived by his wife of 47 years, Claytease C. Hull of Delmar, MD; three daughters: Maria (Otis) Bynum of Wilmington, DE, Tamara Hull of Gaithersburg, MD and Natalie Hull of Delmar, MD; two granddaughters: Ashley and Alexis Bynum of Wilmington, DE; siblings: Wilson (Julia) Hull and Bernard (Mary) Hull, all of Silver Spring, MD, Flora Hull Grantham of Smithfield, NC and Wayne (Helen) Hull of Framingham, MA; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Two sisters and two brothers: Louise, Doris, Lloyd and Ware preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Wesley Temple United Methodist Church in Salisbury where friends may call, Friday from 6:30-9:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, one hour prior to service.  Interment will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 9, 2013 at the Eastern Shore Veteran's Cemetery in Hurlock, MD.
