Audrey Douglas-Gibson Obituary

Audrey's Journey

Audrey A. Douglas Gibson departed this life on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at her home in Pocomoke City, Maryland, surrounded by her family.  She was born April 2, 1949, to the late Ogress and Alice Lee Savage Douglas.  She was the third youngest of eight children.

Audrey was educated in Accomack County Public Schools until she relocated to Philadelphia, PA.  She started her career with Marriott Hotels where she worked for 15 years before becoming an entrepreneur alongside her husband, Joseph (Joe), in the family businesses (The Cubicle Lounge, Orange Blossom and Service Stations) until her semi-retirement in 2016.

Audrey was a member of the Philadelphia Licensed Tavern & Merchants Association (PLTMA), where she assisted in the orchestration of obtaining scholarships for youth by bringing the distributors and bar owners together in fund raising efforts annually.

Audrey always had the ability to bring people together for entertainment i.e., family holiday dinners, reunions, bus trips, cabarets and good ole fashion fun.  She loved to see her family and friends together enjoying themselves.  If it was going to be planned, she was determined that it was planned in true fashion to accommodate everyone’s needs.  She had a big heart that was extended to everyone at any given time.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 35 years, Joseph Gibson, three children Tracy Douglas Byrd (McKeever, Sr.), and Agatha M. Douglas, both of Newport News, VA; Rodney L. Douglas, Philadelphia, PA; Five bonus children, George Gibson (Jackie), Parrish Joynes, Jovita Rutledge (Curt), Trina China (Ohmar), and Cedric Gibson (Crystal), all of Philadelphia, PA.  five grandchildren – LaTretta Gibson, Jenniya Douglas, McKeever Byrd, Jr., Chaisa Childs, Mario Byrd, and two great-grandchildren; Eleven bonus grandchildren – Shawnta King, Gerald Johnson, Shannon, Chanel and Sean Joynes, Denia Bullock, Jada and Jordan Gibson, Karleya, Kortney, and Kiyah China; and seven bonus great-grandchildren.

A sister, Grace Holland, Pocomoke City, MD, three brothers, Ernest Douglas (Nanny), Parksley, VA; Martin Knox, Jr. (Polly), Craddockville, VA and Lawrence Douglas (Doris), Clarksville, TN., five sisters-in-law, Thelma Douglas, Pocomoke City, MD, Bernice Douglas, Philadelphia, PA and Valerie Douglas, Wilmington, DE; Agnes Gibson and Wendy Campbell (Leon) Jacksonville, FL; two brothers-in-law, Theodore Gibson, Jacksonville, FL, and Raymond Gibson (Celeste) Philadelphia, PA.  A host of dedicated nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ogress and Alice Lee Douglas, one sister, Mildred Douglas Watkins, five brothers – Eugene “Jake” Taylor, James Douglas, Sr., Ronnie Douglas, Curtis Douglas, and Wallace Douglas and two brothers-in-law, William Watkins, Leroy Holland, and other loving relatives.
