In the early morning hours of Friday, December 18, 2020, God sent for one of his most beloved angels, Barbara Lee Stevenson (Price) McCoy. Barbara, age 84, the eldest of 10 children and beloved daughter of the late Nathaniel “pop-pop” DeShields and Mary “Meme” Deshields was born on June 7, 1936 in Snow Hill, Maryland. Barbara was married to Sidney “Sid” McCoy, Sr. who preceded her in death in 2007.
Barbara graduated from the former Worcester High School in Newark, MD. After graduating, she was united in holy matrimony to Kendall Price and from that union blessed with six children: Kendall “Buster” Stevenson, Debra Ann Price, Mary Diana Price, Wayde Preston Price, Johnny Edward Price, and Michael Ray Price.
Barbara received her spiritual upbringing at an early age at the St. James Holiness Church in Snow Hill, MD. She later joined the New Dimensions Ministry in Salisbury, MD where she was currently worshipping until she could no longer attend due to health issues.
Barbara was employed in several careers ranging from a seamstress at the Manhattan Shirt Factory, cook/cafeteria staff at an elementary school in Delmar, driver/deliverer for Meals on Wheels helping to deliver meals to the elderly, upholsterer at Sealy Furniture, as well as operated her own take-out soul food restaurant.
Barbara loved reading the BIBLE, sewing, cooking and baking (especially her cakes that she was well known for), and completing large print PennyPress word searches. She loved using her tablet to write scriptures, recipes, addresses and phone numbers. She enjoyed daily talks on the phone with her aunt Bea and always looked forward to the Annual DeShield’s Day and Annual DeShield’s family reunion.
To know Barbara was to love her. She was a beautiful and kind person who loved her family and friends. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and a listening ear. One of her favorite past times included watching westerns, Andy Griffin and The Golden Girls.
She was "mother" to many and highly respected amongst her former co-workers, friends, family and neighbors. Barbara touched the hearts of many with her love, wisdom, and wit; in addition, she could be “sassy”. Her friends could attest to her great joy, love and camaraderie. Barbara loved taking care of her family and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memory: six children, Kendall “Buster” Stevenson (Amanda), Debra P. Tull (McKinley), Mary Diana Price, Wayde Preston Price, Johnny Edward Price (Anne), Michael Ray Price (Glenda) (Glenda was also a dedicated caregiver); her stepson, Sidney McCoy, Jr. (Carol); two sisters, Martha M. DeShields and Catherine “Kate” Handy; one brother, Albert L. DeShields; one aunt, Edith “Bea” Lankford; Brother In-law, Harold W. Purnell; dear friend Rennie Corbin, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and loved ones.
Barbara was preceded in death by three sisters, Alfonsie Purnell, Mary Copeland, Shirley Harvey; three brothers, Linwood Stevenson, Nathaniel “Jack” DeShields, Jr. and John Harry DeShields.
