On Saturday, September 24, 2022, Elizabeth (Carr) Chase peacefully departed this earthly life at the age of 100, in the Wicomico Nursing Home, Salisbury, Maryland 21801.
Elizabeth, fondly called Liz and Mom Shug, was born June 5, 1922, on the Howard Brownawn Farm, on Steeles Neck Road, to the late Mary and Ernest Carr. She attended the first to fifth grades at the Nanticoke School, which stood in the fork of Elliott’s Island and Steeles Neck Roads. For sixth grade, she went to a one-room school in Vienna. Meanwhile, her sister Nellie had moved to Philadelphia and wanted Liz to join her and go to school there, so Liz went north for the seventh and eighth grades. She returned home at fifteen. Wanting a career in nursing, she enrolled in a program at Highland Manor in Ellicott City.
Liz was joined in holy matrimony to Isaac Newton Chase on December 4, 1936, which began their sixty-one years together. He never wanted Liz to work outside the home, but when a new elementary school was built on Ocean Gateway in Vienna, Liz was hired as the first cook. In a big new kitchen, for ten years, she prepared meals for more than seventy children each day, who came from as far as Linkwood and Hawkeye. The enrollment initially included only African American students. Liz baked cakes every other day for the children and is still remembered by many. Their parents would send butter to flavor the memorable cakes she made with the powdered eggs and milk the Board of Education supplied. She was recently asked if she would share her cake recipe and she responded with an account of each ingredient. As much as she enjoyed the children, Liz finally moved on to the nursing career she had always wanted. She trained and spent thirteen and a half years with the State Hospital in Cambridge, Maryland as a Psychiatric Nurse’s aide. Before retiring in 1979, her firm but caring manner helped her win cooperation from even the most difficult patients. When that gentle approach failed, her sense of humor saw her through.
After retiring from the state, Liz nursed the sick on Elliott’s Island and elsewhere.
Liz joined the Wesley Church in Vienna early on and was a lifelong member of what is now Wesley United Methodist Church until her health began to fail her. After she retired from the State Hospital, for more than eighteen years, she supervised cooking for the church events such as funerals, Homecomings and other gatherings. In cooperation with the Maryland Food Bank, she ran a pantry from the church hall, serving the needs and hungry of Dorchester County. When the church space became unavailable, she moved the operation to her home. She continued for twenty-five years, providing help to people needing assistance who came to her home from every corner of the county.
Her two legacies are longevity and love. Liz leaves many who will cherish her memories, her grandchildren: Beverly Jackson, Salisbury, Md, Dr. Lawanda Dockins-Mills (Tyrone), of Hebron, MD; COL (R) Chauncey Dockins (Cynthia) of Elkridge, MD and Anitra Appleby (Rev. T.J.) of Springfield, MO.; seven great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews; cousins; close friends, and many other relatives and special loves. She will be deeply missed.
In addition to her parents, Liz’s husband, Isaac Newton Chase, her only son Clifton Odell Dockins and her daughter-in-law, Anna Mae Dockins, her only brother Levin, who tragically died young, her sisters Nellie, Emma, Addie, and Irene, and a beloved grandson, Victor Jackson, all preceded her in death.
Psalms 23:1-6 NKJV
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.
NKJV: New King James Version
