James Henry Mumford, Sr.

James H. Mumford, Sr. born December 7, 1930, in Millsboro, DE, was the son of the late Lottie Showell and Otto Mumford.  He peacefully departed this life on Monday, April 22, 2019, at Atlantic Shores Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Millsboro, DE. 

“Jimmy,” as he was affectionally called, received his former education in the public schools of Sussex County in Millsboro, DE. 

On April 5, 1952, he was united in holy matrimony to Natalie Briddell of Berlin.  From this union, the couple was blessed with six children. 

He served three years in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, later receiving an honorable discharge in 1953.

He was employed as a truck driver for the former Hitchens Brothers Trucking Company in Selbyville, DE.  He was also employed as a bus driver for the Worcester County Commission On Aging and several other transportation companies during his lifetime before retiring.

He was a member of Curtis United Methodist Church in Bishopville, MD where he served on the Board of Trustees and as the former Cemetery Sextant.  Jimmy was also a member of the Lincoln Lodge # 53, F & AM, P.H.A., and the American Legion Duncan Showell Post # 231 of Berlin, MD.

He possessed a humble and quiet spirit. He was a gentle man who loved his family, an awesome grandfather to his grandchildren, and a devoted friend. His favorite hobbies were watching the television and fixing anything broken.

“Jimmy”  leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of sixty-seven years: Natalie Mumford of Bishopville, MD; five children: Celeste Briddell of New Castle, DE, Linda Mumford of Newark, DE, James “Sonny” Mumford of Bishopville, MD, Lisa Mumford of Salisbury, MD, and Michele (Harrison) Custis of Frankford, DE; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; three special aunts: Helen Handy, Mildred “Middy” Handy and Iona Marshall; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2019, at Calvary Pentecostal church in Bishopville, MD where friends may view two hours prior to service. Interment will be held at Curtis U.M. Church Cemetery, also in Bishopville, MD.
