Joseph Johnson, (Bungum) 89, was born January 5, 1931 in Charleston, South Carolina to the late Christopher Johnson and Josephine (Simmons) Johnson. He peacefully departed this earthly life and entered eternal rest on Tuesday November 17, 2020, at Aurora Senior Living of Manokin in Princess Anne, Maryland.
Joseph attended Three Trees Elementary School in James Island South Carolina until the age of 13. He traveled to Florida where he worked as a migrant worker from Florida to New York. Joseph made Maryland his home. He became a master carpenter and worked for Don Patterson for over 30 years.
In 1975, Joseph dedicated his life to serving the Lord. He made several missionary trips abroad, travelling to Israel, and Haiti. He was the Pastor of Miracle Temple Church Inc. in Pittsville, Maryland for 20 years until his health began to decline. He loved the Lord with all his heart and would do anything for anyone. He truly had a servant’s heart and a pastor’s spirit. Joseph was full of compassion and understanding. He was quick to listen to others and offer empathy to them.
Joseph was a family man and he loved and valued his family. His recreational enjoyment fishing and was considered an avid fisherman by those who knew him. He was a devoted clergy, loving father and grandfather, and a trusted friend. Joseph will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
He leaves to cherish loving memories, his loving wife: Arenthina Bivens Johnson of Fruitland, MD; seven children: Joe Cecil of Salem, NJ, Edna (Nate) Parson of Baltimore, MD, Joanne Johnson of Eden, MD, Moses (Ashley) Johnson, Virginia (Thomas) Parker, Joseph Johnson Jr., Priscilla (James) Holbrook, all of Salisbury, MD; three stepdaughters: Faye (Henry) Bartley, Carla Bivens, Tracey Powell, all of Salisbury, MD; eighteen grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; thirty-six great grandchildren; ten step grandchildren; seventeen great-great grands, eight siblings: Buster (Evelina) Walker, Marion (Hilda) Cromwell, Ceaser (Inez) Jenkins, John (Mattie) Jenkins, Josephine (John) Banks, Mariah (Herbert) Frazier, Rosabelle Wring, and Ruth Ann Carr, all of Charleston, SC; special niece: Val (Barry) Bradley of Salisbury, MD; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended relatives and friends.
Besides his parents: Christopher Johnson and Josephine (Simmons) Johnson, and Ceaser Jenkins; siblings: Julia Johnson, Helen Johnson Moore, Christopher Johnson, Richard Johnson, Leroy Jenkins, Eugene Seabrook, and Thomas Jenkins, all preceded him in death.
