Texas – Maybelle Elizabeth Smiley, 90, formerly of Delmar, DE died Monday, May 8, 2017 at Seton Medical Center in Harker Heights, TX.
Born in Delmar, Delaware, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Alberta (Johnson) Scye. Her late husband Rev. Clement L. Smiley died in 1986.
She was a graduate of the former Paul Laurence Dunbar School in Laurel, DE and Delaware State College in Dover, DE.
She was formerly employed at Delmar Elementary School and Lil Red Hen Nursery School as a teacher’s aide, worked as a private Certified Nursing Assistant, worked in the Dietary Dept. at Harrison House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Delmar, DE.
She was a member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church in Columbia, DE, Solomon’s AUMP Church of Williamsburg, MD and Mt. Pleasant AUMP Church in Wallertown, MD. She formerly served as a member of the former Women’s Society Christian Service, now called United Methodist Women. She taught Sunday school and worked as a Youth Leader at Mt. Nebo. She performed all the duties of a pastor’s wife at Solomon’s and Mt. Pleasant AUMP church in addition to ushering, serving as a choir member and church clerk.
Her civic involvements included Retired Senior Program Volunteer at Laurel Senior Center and the Nanticoke and Memphis Senior Centers.
Her survivors include four children: Deanna Smiley-Morris, Copperas Cove, TX; Clement Raymond Smiley, Brownwood, TX; Renee Brown Seymour (Ronald), Memphis, TN; Regina Batson, Seaford, DE; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; one sister Ernestine Scye Brown, Seaford, DE; three sisters-in law: Evelyn Handy (Bobby), Delmar, DE, Barbara Johnson Millsboro, DE & Mildred Gibson, Camden, NJ; one brother-in law Emerson Hill, Camden, NJ; several nieces and nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by three siblings: Merle Johnson, Floyd “Sam” Scye and a sister Mary Scye; two sons-in-law: Alfred Batson and Eric Morris Sr.; four sisters-in law: Joan, Shirley, Faustina, Barbara; one brother-in law Sherman.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Jolley Memorial Chapel in Salisbury. Friends may view Friday evening from 6-7:30 pm and again on Saturday, one hour prior to service. Interment will be in Mt. Nebo Church Cemetery in Columbia, DE.
