Ronald “Ronnie” James Johnson, age 71, of Salisbury, MD, went home to be with the Lord, very early Wednesday morning on September 23, 2020 at TidalHealth in Salisbury, MD. He was born in Somerset County, MD January 16, 1949. He was the son of Olivia Doane of Princess Anne, MD and Matthew Wharton of Hebron, MD. Ronnie was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Johnson, who later adopted him. He was educated in the public school system of Somerset County, and received his high school diploma from Job Corp.
Ronnie was an extremely hard worker and held various employment positions all of his life. While living in Maryland, he drove mail truck for a private contractor. After moving to Delaware, he was employed by the state of Delaware where he worked in various positions until his retirement from the Delaware School System. He worked at the Department of Corrections, at State Bridges as a toll booth collector, at the Delaware Park Raceway as a security officer, and a security officer at the Delaware Park Raceway and Casino, in the Delaware school system at St. Georges Voc-Technical School, and Hodges Vocational School. However, his most recent position at Pohanka Mercedes, allowed him to use both his love of driving and “talking.” He was the best valet, driving premium cars to be serviced and then returning them to their owners. Ronnie’s love of driving and service wasn’t just for his job, it spilled over to the family as well. He became the families’ long distance driver, carrying us all over the United States to appointments, to visit loved ones, for reunions, and just for the fun of it.
Ronnie was a faithful and active member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Oaksville, MD, where he served as trustee, participated on the Oaksville Cemetery Committee and was a member of the St. Mark Adult Choir and the Milbourne Family Choir . He also served on the Oaksville Community Ball Park restoration committee. In addition, Ronnie was well known for visiting the sick and shut in at nursing homes and hospitals.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his mother, Olivia Doane, his adopted parents, Alfred “Uncle Alfred” and Henrietta “ Aunt Etta” Johnson, and his father and step mother, Matthew and Freda Wharton. and his foster siblings Diane Worthy, and Philip Harper.
