Clarence R. Purnell

BALTIMORE – Clarence R. Purnell, Jr., 92 formerly of Berlin died Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Loch Raven V.A. Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Baltimore, MD.

Born in Berlin, he was the son of the late Clarence Purnell, Sr. and Margie (Jarmon) Purnell.  His late wife Viola Purnell died in 2011.

He was an Army veteran, who served during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Baptist Church in Baltimore where he served as a Deacon.  He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Blind Association and VFW in Baltimore.

His survivors include a nephew, whom he reared as a son: Edward “Butch” (Diane) Welch of; a daughter-in-law: Sharon Welch, all of Baltimore; two siblings: Betty Lewis and Boyd “Joe” (Hennie) Purnell, all of Berlin, MD, a goddaughter: Ciarra Washington of Virginia Beach, VA, a sister-in-law: Rebecca “Becky” Purnell of Berlin and a host of nieces and nephews.

A nephew whom he reared as a son Carl Welch and five siblings: Pauline Purnell, Milton Purnell, Sr., Margie “Henrietta” Tindley, Dellaphine Haynes and Clifford Purnell preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 12, 2016 at St. Mark’s Baptist Church, 655 Bentalou Street, Baltimore, MD.  Interment will be 1:30 pm, Sunday, November 13, 2016 at St. Paul U.M. Church Cemetery in Berlin, MD.  Friends may view Friday from 5-8 pm at the church and again on Saturday, one hour prior to the service.

Services are entrusted to Wylie Funeral Home in Randallstown, MD and Jolley Memorial Chapel in Salisbury.
